For good or ill he was the voice of generations. Nobody asked the Roman Centurion, or the former killer St. Paul (previously Saul, Book of Acts) if they could sing well. Instead. members of the first beloved Community went to Athens, to the strangers and “unknown God” and hoped all good things for them. The early and 13th century Catholic Church respected many poets and philosophers from that era, in contrast to which our own times may seem crude and savage despite our technological wizardry.
