France is expected “to deploy approximately 70,000 police officers nationwide on October 24 as authorities brace for renewed left-Islamist unrest following some of the country’s worst street violence in years. The massive security operation comes amid growing fears that left-Islamist unrest, escalating public anger and confrontations between rival political groups could intensify tensions across Europe this weekend.
Interior Minister Laurent Nunez announced on October 23 that the deployment would include elite units normally assigned to counter-terrorism operations and hostage rescues. He warned that social media calls for violence had emerged from radical-left groups, raising concerns about further confrontations during demonstrations using to the cost-of-living crisis.
