“In the context of Christian liturgy, a canticle is a psalm-like song with biblical lyrics taken from elsewhere than the Book of Psalms, but included in psalters and books such as the breviary. — Wikipedia.
St. Paul says, “Let the word of Christ dwell in you abundantly: in all wisdom, teaching and admonishing one another in psalms, hymns and spiritual canticles, singing in grace in your hearts to God. All whatsoever you do in word or in work, do all in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ, giving thanks to God and the Father by him. — Col. 3:12 – 17
Some of the most beautiful modern Canticles today have been given to us by John Michael Talbot. Many of us have been listening to his Sacred music for decades. One need not agree with his every personal theological opinion(1) to recognize that his album For the Bride for instance is a musical and theological masterpiece, every word of it, drawn and interpreted from Sacred Scripture and the fathers.
And so many other compositions!
I am sure there must be other Catholic musicians and singers who edify many. But One Talbot for one lifetime is enough for my wife and I, who, to this day, and since the 1980s, listen to and pray with him in the sacred songs he gifted to us all. SH.
