Proportionality in all conflicts is to be desired as I have stated many times over many years. War is hell. Hamas knew what it was doing. It was deliberately trying to provoke a war by a vicious sneak attack in a period of relative stability.
Proportionality is the ideal, but history shows it is seldom achieved. If you deliberately start a horrific war, killing and torturing all kinds of young people and others you had better be prepared to finish the war, win or lose. You have forfeited the right to make the rules. Israel was constantly provoked over many years.

Now the war is on. What a sorrowful thing! Israel, unlike Hamas, gives proper notice when it acts. Hamas knew their own people would reap the whirlwind after October 7. War is hell. It is also publicity which will always create sympathy. Hamas knows the tactic so very well.
Where was proportionality during WWII in the nightly firebombing of Japan, or the bombing of Dresden? The only way to stop wars is to stop provoking wars.
