Perception, Reality and the Videodrome

“The television screen [or, similarly, Internet ‘entertainment’ programming] has become the retina of the mind’s eye…the battle for the mind of North America will be fought in the video arena, the Videodrome.

“Whatever appears on the television screen emerges as raw experience for those who watch it. Therefore television is reality and reality is less than television. Your reality is already half television.

“After all, there is nothing real outside our perception of reality (in this world), is there? The “new flesh” is the extension of the senses via the media. It spells Doom for all who are ‘entertained’ by IT. The eyes are the windows of the soul.”—from the movie Videodrome.”

Inducing the Double-Mind

“Have you ever noticed how television and print media will scream themselves hoarse in news documentaries, editorials and heavy analytical pieces about “rising pornography, crime, violence, gunplay” etc.? And yet in the same TV Guide announcing the latest special on “The Crisis of Sex and Violence in America,” there will appear an advertisement for “Miami Vice,” the “show that brings you the action and excitement you’ve come to expect” etc.

Or your newspaper will condemn sex and violence in the loftiest terms but there in its entertainment section is a half-page advertisement for a new “action” movie accompanied by a photo of women in string bikinis and high heels fondling automatic pistols and machine-guns.

There is the official attack on sex and violence. There is the official attack on Satanism. And yet, one need not be Sherlock Holmes to detect that the very themes which Orthodox Officialdom condemns with its right hand, its left-hand Counterculture Officialdom disseminates.” — Secret Societies and Psychological Warfare by Michael Hoffman
