…Taylor.” Strange to place her here, but it’s a Time Out and it was the song which drew me in.
“The song [see pg. bottom] is a hauntingly tender ballad from his 1970 concept album Watertown. The album itself is a departure from his usual style—it’s a narrative-driven piece (summary song).
🎶 About the Song:
- “Elizabeth” is track six on Watertown, written by Bob Gaudio (of The Four Seasons) and lyricist Jake Holmes for Sinatra.
- The lyrics evoke a dreamlike memory of a woman named Elizabeth, blending nostalgia and heartbreak. Lines like “Dressed in dreams for me / You were what I wished to see” suggest she was once an idealized figure in the narrator’s life, now lost to time.
- Holmes once said, “I just love that name… I imagined a girl named Elizabeth and wrote words that were a tribute to her.” Gaudio in a YouTube video tells the story of how the first tapes were, at Sinatra’s request, flown to Taylor, brought by courier to her home. No reaction is recorded that I am aware of.
- “When you came to me I found it could never be, Elizabeth…so a dream has to end when it’s real, not pretend…” (Lyric from the song)
- All kinds of rumors spread about Sinatra and Taylor. Few of them, it is said, can be proved or disproved. Neither one of them left their fields of entertainment unscarred. Few do, not even Mel Gibson. Not even us in life one step before the Confessional door. The worst are those tabloid writers who are happy to point out the sins of others, whether true, exaggerated or concocted for $$$. And then there are those who are even happier to believe the worst in others. Frank Sinatra’s funeral was held in the Catholic Church and he was buried in a Catholic cemetery without a headstone. Did he receive the Last Rites? I don’t know. But I hope so
🎧 : During the recording sessions, Sinatra made a demo of “Elizabeth” and sent it to someone [Taylor] as a birthday gift—a personal touch that adds to the song’s emotional weight.
If you’re into Sinatra’s more introspective work, Watertown is a hidden gem. — Co-Pilot and other sources.
