It is stunning that a truism should be stunning. But given the last four years of the Biden administration, President Donald Trump, by reaffirming the exclusive male-female binary at the Federal level on day 1 of the second term of his Presidency, has done a marvelous thing for the entire world. This is something Leftists, who despise the idea of Natural Law, abhor, and we can be certain that they are already seeking to undo as much of it as possible at the state and local levels, and in Leftist media. It will doubtless be their long term goal to completely undo it all (and more) when they return to office. This, I’m afraid, is the flaw in the modern conception of “democracy,” unlike that in St. Thomas’ teaching. It is a pendulum constantly swinging here in profoundly contradictory directions, with devastating impact.
But it isn’t only gender issues we have to be concerned about. Consider: does human life begin at conception or not? Catholics for over two thousand years have believed and taught that it does.
Edward Feser writes fairly,
“Trump’s pardoning of the pro-life activists is an excellent development and deserves praise, as do some other, smaller recent developments. But it is quite absurd to pretend, as some are doing, that this somehow shows that the concerns many pro-lifers had during the campaign were misplaced.
For example, it doesn’t change the fact that Trump proposed an IVF mandate, supported keeping the abortion pill available, and actively opposed state-level six week abortion bans. And all of these policies are grave assaults on the unborn. If he reverses course on them, he will deserve further praise and support. If he continues to promote them, he will deserve criticism and resistance. It’s that simple. He is in power now and his more fanatical supporters can no longer hide behind the rationalization that criticizing him could harm his electoral chances. — Edward Feser, @FeserEdward, X.

Politics in itself, which in the American dialectic is a constantly moving target, ever evolving, cannot save our souls; and so, despite what we see in Social Media and elsewhere, we cannot make this “political process” ultimate, even if we must try to block the march of evil—and advance the Good— whenever we can by means of it, and with much ardent prayer. The only stable law in the United States, I fear, is change.
So we can’t lose sight of the biblical view of history, which tells us that the ultimate victory over the Antichristic will only come from Jesus Christ, “suddenly,” at the end of history. When humankind least expects it.
