I like Damian Thompson. And I like the video, all the sleek suits, handsome people and cool cars. I’m nostalgic in many, many ways; but there was often a world of difference in dress and girth between a modern 1940s office or retail worker chosen for PR purposes and the average butcher, baker or candlestick maker.
Even Jackie Gleason & a host of other public & political persons were heavy set in the 1950s. Go back to Cardinal Wolsey, G. K Chesterton, or John XXIII for heavens sake.
It’s unseemly and uncharitable for Catholics to be constantly virtue signaling relative to waist size, changing fashions and cool cars.
There’s no particular virtue in wearing a fancy ribbon called a necktie. Even to Mass. And it’s just plain wrong to cast suspicious judgmental eyes on others.
Modesty should be our only rule. And that’s difficult enough in our time.
